Dental sealants are a good option to help younger and high-risk patients prevent cavities. A thin, plastic finish is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. For example, by applying sealants as soon as a child’s long-term molars and pre-molars come in, teeth can be protected before decay has any chance to do damage.
Sealants can also provide adults with considerable benefits; however, it is important patients maintains a healthy oral healthcare routine to ensure success.
Sealants are not usually seen when you talk or smile as they are clear, white or tinted in colour. They are also extremely thin. Sealants are carefully applied to fill the grooves and pits of molars and can last from 5 to 10 years. Make sure to have your dentist check them at regular intervals.

Meet Dr. Lily Nguyen
Dr. Lily Nguyen (“Win”) spent the majority of her childhood growing up in Toronto and Winnipeg before her family settled in Ottawa. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Ottawa and her Doctorate of Dental Medicine degree from Nova Southeastern University in sunny south Florida. Upon graduation, she was inducted into the national dental honor society Omicron Kappa Upsilon for exemplary character and scholarship. Following dental school, Dr. Nguyen pursued advanced training at a 2-year hospital-based general practice residency at the University of Virginia so that she could be better equipped to treat any type of patient who might sit in her dental chair. During her residency, she served as chief resident in her second year; coordinating and providing treatment to patients with medical complexities including head and neck cancer, organ failure, bleeding disorders and children with special needs.
Having spent the last few years living and working in the US, her feet got itchy again and it was time for a new adventure and a change of scenery. She decided to call Victoria her new home after was charmed off her feet by the island’s natural beauty, friendly faces and relaxing pace. On rainy days, she likes to cozy up with some tea, watch all sorts of cooking programs and learn about different cultures through culinary histories. Otherwise, when the weather is nice, she enjoys getting out into nature, dog-watching, and cultivating her (admittedly amateur) green thumb by puttering around in her urban garden.
Dr. Nguyen believes the best approach to dentistry is prevention through patient education and compassionate, patient-centered care. She is dedicated to providing positive experiences and aims to build genuine relationships with all of her patients, making sure they understand their treatment every step of the way. Her patience and approachability are sure to make you feel at ease. She can’t wait to meet you!

She went on to obtain a Doctor of Dental Medicine at the University of Sydney, where she learned to appreciate dentistry’s unique integration of medicine, patient care, and artistry.
